Planning, Attention, and Processing Speed
Cognitive studies can help translate planning, attention, working-memory, and processing-speed findings into lower-friction supports.

Planning, attention, working memory, and processing speed are often treated as one vague problem called executive dysfunction. The studies are more useful than that. Narzisi et al. (2026) and Wang et al. (2026) suggest co-occurring ASD+ADHD groups can show broader cognitive-processing difficulties, especially around planning, attention, working memory, and processing speed.
Cognitive findings can guide support
Cognitive findings are not personal verdicts. They are clues for support design. If a group study finds planning or processing-speed differences, the practical question is how to reduce planning load, slow transitions, and make next steps easier to hold in mind. Young et al. (2020) supports individualized, environment-aware support rather than diagnosis-only assumptions.
Planning load
Planning is more than making a list. It includes choosing goals, ordering steps, estimating time, predicting barriers, switching between levels of detail, and restarting after disruption. Sinzig et al. (2008) found planning and flexibility differences across autism and ADHD comparison groups, which supports matching help to the exact planning barrier.
Processing speed
Processing speed can affect how quickly a person can respond, shift, write, decide, or recover from incoming information. Li et al. (2017) found processing-speed difficulties in both high-functioning ASD and ADHD child groups, while Narzisi et al. (2026) found lower processing-speed scores in a co-occurring clinical group. This does not mean every AuDHD person is slow; it means time pressure can be a real access barrier.
Attention and working memory
Working memory asks the brain to hold information while doing something else. Attention asks the brain to select, sustain, shift, and return. Roselló et al. (2022) and Wang et al. (2026) both support the importance of looking at cognitive and behavioral profiles over time rather than assuming a single static support need.
Practical accommodations
- Replace multi-step verbal instructions with written steps and examples.
- Add thinking time before requiring speech, decisions, or public answers.
- Use checklists for sequence, not as proof that memory should improve.
- Create transition buffers between meetings, errands, classes, or care tasks.
- Separate planning from doing: plan when regulated, execute with fewer choices.
The support target is not intelligence. It is friction: too much information, too fast, with too many hidden steps.
Reduce cognitive load before adding effort
Planning and processing-speed findings are useful because they point toward load reduction. If the brain is juggling too many steps, too much speed, and too little certainty, adding pressure may make performance worse. Cognitive studies should not be treated as personal proof, but they can justify practical changes that reduce hidden mental work (Narzisi et al., 2026; Wang et al., 2026; Young et al., 2020).
- Give the plan in writing before expecting action.
- Separate choosing, sequencing, and doing into different moments.
- Use examples to reduce guessing, especially for open-ended tasks.
- Allow response time before requiring speech, decisions, or public answers.
- Use fewer simultaneous channels: not verbal instructions, chat messages, slides, and time pressure at once.
Translate findings into accommodations
A child or group-level cognitive finding should be translated carefully. The accommodation is not "assume this person cannot plan." It is "make planning accessible and check what support changes performance." That can include written steps, transition buffers, reduced speed pressure, working-memory aids, and explicit restart points (Roselló et al., 2022; Sinzig et al., 2008).
Slow access without lowering dignity
Processing-speed support can be misunderstood as lowering expectations. A better frame is dignity and access. Giving more response time, written steps, or fewer simultaneous inputs does not mean assuming the person is less capable. It means removing speed pressure that may be irrelevant to the real goal (Li et al., 2017; Narzisi et al., 2026; Young et al., 2020).
- In school: allow thinking time before public answers and provide written instructions before tasks begin.
- At work: separate brainstorming from decisions so processing does not happen under social pressure.
- At home: ask one question at a time when someone is overloaded.
- In healthcare: send forms or questions ahead of appointments when possible.
- In relationships: treat slower response as an access need, not a lack of care.
Make speed optional where possible
Not every task needs speed. Many school, work, home, and healthcare demands become more accessible when speed is optional and accuracy, understanding, or follow-through is the real goal. This matters because planning and processing demands can look like low motivation when the task is actually too fast, too verbal, or too overloaded with hidden steps (Narzisi et al., 2026; Wang et al., 2026).
